Old People Suck

Old People. We love 'em and we hate' em. I mean, they’re definitely responsible for our upbringing and our culture but they're also the reason why global warming hasn’t been solved and why corrupt capitalism reigns supreme.

This week, we talked about marriage, and how old people make it suck. Everythings always about the culture; ask Joan Didion for example. She raves on about the loose marriage culture of Vegas and the decay of the nuclear family. I mean, cmon, live and let live. In her essay, she practically makes fun of a girl who got pregnant underage and uses her broken family for amusement. Talk about elitism. She doesn’t know that girl's life, or why her father left, yet she thinks it’s appropriate to talk about how her way is better than everyone else's.

It’s quite annoying. All the arbitrary rules that geriatric folk make just so they can say “back in my day”. The worst part is that they’re our only connection to the past, so we have to listen to their stories. David Foster Wallace was a topic in our class recently, and we learned that he was one of the last true users of irony. What’s even more ironic is that he hated english essays and papers that pandered to critics and english classes, so imagine his dismay if we sat discussing the rhetoric that his pieces had.

All in all, these figures of history that we learn about and learn from are quite eccentric in their own ways. To a certain point, their hypocrisy basically dictates how we view things, giving us a distorted view on the world.

  1. I like the casual tone; it helps convey your exasperation. I think the topic is more complex than you make it seem here, but I do understand this perspective. The points you make about Didion and older people in general have some truth in them, but I think it would be better to think about life from their perspective. We are practically living in different worlds, and with that consideration, it is not surprising that some of their views seem antiquated.
